There is quite a bit of design work that goes into a map before any carving gets done. Files are created and edited to include roads and road names and lake statistics. Usually the next step is to glue up boards to get something large enough to work with. Next carving takes place, then painting, lots of hand painting, and then epoxy and/or a nice clear finish. Of course it is not complete until you add a frame and hanger.
